Today is a day of reflection, on the hardships, on Today is a day of reflection, on the hardships, on the losses, on the shifts, and on the love. We have all experienced so much in the last 365 days, collectively and on an individual basis. This year has been heavy for so many and my heart goes out to all of those that lost loved ones. I hope 2021 is filled with an abundance of joy (and hugs!) for everyone. ✨

Aiken is widely known as Thoroughbred Country with Aiken is widely known as Thoroughbred Country with horse racing, polo, and steeplechases. But did you know that it was founded as a railroad town?  Not only that, the placement of the rail line, and subsequently the location of downtown, was all because of a love story! The surveyor tasked with finding the best place to lay the line fell in love with the daughter of a cotton farmer who needed an easier way to get his cotton from here to Charleston. So when the surveyor asked for her hand in marriage the reply was “No railroad for me, no Sara for thee”, the rest is history!

The Aiken County Historical Museum's collection is The Aiken County Historical Museum's collection is housed in Banksia, which was the winter colony mansion of the Howes. It definitely qualifies as a mansion with 32 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, and a ballroom and is 17,500 square feet! It was named after the Banksia rose and preciously served as a SRS boarding house, a Methodist college, the first home of University of South Carolina Aiken, and the library. @aikencountymuseum
